I didn’t start my painting journey until I retired ten years ago. My friend had recently died and I had
promised her that I would have a go at watercolour.
My daughter lives in New Zealand and I desperately wanted to
paint her view of the mountains.
Another friend was already a good watercolourist and she took me
along to her class at the local Malvern Hills College to do Ink and
Watercolour.
I felt so out of my depth. Everyone seemed so good but I practised at home and joined the Art Club,
where I got lots of support and no one minded if I watched them painting.
I persevered and went onto separate drawing and watercolour classes for another two years at our
wonderful College. Still feeling less able than most, I began to get pleasure and some sense of
achievement in my pictures.
Very early on in my journey, I learnt to observe my surroundings,
especially clouds. Even if I couldn’t paint them to my satisfaction, I
enjoyed looking and appreciating.
A chance remark from a member, at the art club changed my
painting completely. “I think you may be more suited to acrylic”.
So off I went to acrylic classes and I haven’t looked back. I have had good teachers along the way,
learning huge amounts and, over the last few years, being well supported in my own projects.
The beauty of acrylic painting for me is that the painting is
developed over time. If you don’t like something, you just paint it
out. (My first few acrylics were pretty thick in places!) I can be my
own critic and change it to look as I want it to.
And finally, one to go one the wall!
